A continuous hot roiling pilot has successfully been developed at the Rolling Technology Centre. Oxidation, wear and degradation of roll materials are studied in controlled rolling conditions and by direct comparison. Different lubrication strategies can be evaluated related to the rolling parameters integrating work roll oxidation/wear and strip surface scale. A controlled strip surface temperature and oxidation is obtained by the implementation of dedicated devices to heat, maintain are cool the strip in protective atmospheres. The pilot opens unique possibilities to validate metallurgical models, to study new processing routes and to develop new sensors.
