The degree of maturity of non-destructive magnetic techniques for In-plant assessment of mechanical properties has significantly improved over the past few years: For ferromagnetic fiat carbon strip steels, mature solutions exist which are on the market or ready to get on the market. A very good level of accuracy is already reached and validated for the standard AIK and IF metallurgies for the automotive applications. However, such systems have new challenges to face in particular with the development of Ultra High Strength Steels. For heavy plates, a good overall precision was also observed. However it was found during the progress of the work that a substantial progress is required for high strength grades, with significant gains to achieve. This subject has been submitted as a new RFCS proposal in September 2004.
