In the last decade different forecasts were made on the possible future shares of the two main steelmaking technologies. Considering that scrap is art important charge material for both technologies, this question was analysed on the basis of scrap availability. After all, the source of all scrap types is earlier steel production, so their amount depends on earlier production rates. Using the internationally accepted rules for the estimation of the different scrap types (circulating, process and capital scrap) and the specific scrap consumption of the two technologies, it can be pointed out that BOP steelmaking is a net scrap producer (approx 200-400 kg/ton), while EAF steelmaking is a net scrap consumer (-500-700 kg/ton without DRi addition) technology. Estimations were made concerning the ratio of the two technologies necessary for providing the long-term scrap supply of the steel industry.
