Electrostatic precipitators (ESPs) are commonly applied for the de-dusting of sinter plant waste gas but are unable to meet the exacting emission standards that are now being introduced across the EU. Although fabric filters offer more efficient dust removal than ESPs their performance on sinter plants is limited by the properties of economic fabrics conventionally used in bag filters. An alternative filter technology, wherein metallic filter screens are used instead of fabric bags, has the potential for achieving the same filtration performance whilst avoiding the operational problems associated with the use of fabric filters. This paper presents details of the design, construction and operational performance of a demonstration plant that has been installed at Corus UK's Scunthorpe Sinter Plant.
