Complex metal forming, high level protection, more and more stringent customer requirements and the necessity to increase productivity are some of the numerous reasons that confront the steel makers to a delivery problem of guaranteed high surface quality strips. Although major improvements have been achieved during the last years, the strip surface, and especially roughness (Ra), is not yet under control. A topography measurement along the whole length of the strip will lead to a better understanding of the influence of the various production parameters on the strip surface. As well coated, un-coated, random (e.g. EDT) and deterministic (e.g. EBT) surfaces are concerned. Therefore, a topography sensor has been developed by CRM. It uses on-line microscopy and advanced image processing.
