NSC and Arcelor have complementary tools to assess oil properties -> towards a better understanding of lubrication and a better dialog with oil suppliers. This is helpful in the development of a new oil. Methodology: first screening of variety of oils on easy-to-run high speed tribometer selecting several candidates, then followed by trials close to industrial conditions on heavier-to-run pilot mill. Oil classification obtained may not be the same as the lubrication regimes looked at in both tests are not the same. In 1~(st) stand conditions (Ra=0.7 mu rn, speed 50-250 m/min), friction decrease was observed when stand reduction was increased, whatever the oil. A lower friction was obtained with viscous oil A, with the advantage of rolling force and rolling power savings compared to other oils. Viscous oils may be an interesting way to explore. Oil A lead to the drawbacks of reaching negative forward slip (unstable rolling conditions) and dirty strip after rolling. Progress outlooks : apart from oil nature itself, there is an interest to better control the feeding conditions to become a real lubrication actuator; it could for instance allow to adapt friction in order to roll in good conditions both IF (soft) and HSS (very hard) grades.
