Two rain events over Thessaloniki, Greece, were examined, concerning the below-cloud scavenging of aerosol particles. Lidar measurements before and after rainfall, provide experimental evidence for the removal of aerosol particles below the precipitation clouds, as this demonstrated in the change of the backscatter and color index profiles. It is emphasized that the existence of only few such measurements can only provide some indicative and not quantitative information for the wet removal, since this is highly dependent both on the rainfall rate and the size of the particles.
