This paper investigates the ballistically induced behind-the-armor transient deformation requirement currently used for body armor acceptance. The overall objective is to validate and/or modify the current National Institute of Justice's (NIJ) requirement for transient deformation measurement. Ballistic experiments, which correlate NIJ transient deformation measurement techniques with injuries induced on instrumented cadavers, were performed. The degree of injury was then compared to the baseline armor data generated in accordance with NIJ standard. Analysis of the live fire tests show that the maximum transient deformation value, as stated in the NIJ test standard, is not an accurate predictor of trauma for high kinetic energy impacts. In several cases the transient deformation measurements as performed per the NIJ standard were acceptable yet, chest injuries on a large proportion of the test specimens resulted in significant injuries.
