Many coal mines have recently turned to the use of Recessed Chamber or Membrane plate filter presses for dewatering fine coal tailings. This change is being brought about due to increasing environmental constraints and cost savings versus alternative technologies (Tailings damns, Belt Presses). This paper gives an overview of how filter presses work and typical styles and options available. It concludes with a case study of two filter presses dewatering fine coal refuse.
