High voltage flexible conductors are employed to interconnect equipment items in electrical substations located on seismically active regions. They have sufficient slack, which allows the conductor to accommodate the relative displacement of the interconnected equipment under seismic loading. However, additional forces due to the dynamic response of the conductor and its interaction with the interconnected equipment could cause additional unpredicted forces resulting in damage or failure of the equipment. With this regard, an investigation was carried out into the dynamic behavior of these conductors and their interaction with the equipment that they interconnect by performing various dynamic tests on a 500 kV flexible conductor and the relevant interconnected equipment. The test program included sine sweep tests, free vibration tests and shake table seismic tests and the test specimen consisted of large scale models of the equipment and the actual size flexible conductor. This paper presents the results of the analyses performed on the measured responses of the system in order to evaluate its dynamic characteristics.
