Session S204: Helping Them Do It at Home

They can do it at home—or can they? Media specialists are often concerned with the "I'll let them do it at home" approach to homework assignments. Yes, many students have access to technology outside of school, but this approach can further widen the gaps between the haves and the have nots, the students who know how to use resources and those are don't. It also increases the possibilities of plagiarism and of over-involvement by parents. Add in Internet cockiness and misperceptions, and the problems of home information misuse increase even more. But, surveys show that students use technology more outside of school than they do in school and are disappointed both level of technology available to them in schools and how teachers expect them to useit. And, some media specialists still feel threatened when students have access to information anywhere other than the media center. But, students will continue to access information anywhere they can and they will not use the school media center if they have more success finding what they need someplace else. Media specialists can help students be successful users of information when doing schoolwork at home and make sure that students use the resources their school provides.
