Many rank tests are available for the testing of unconditional independence, for example tests based on Kendall's tau or Spearman's rho, but for conditional independence this is unfortunately not the case. This paper introduces a general method based on estimation of the conditional distribution functions of response variables given control which allows arbitrary rank tests of unconditional independence to be applied to the testing of conditional independence.
