Development of Recycling Green Building Material Evaluation and Labeling System in Taiwan

While the architectural industry not only exploits the materials from the natural earth resource, producing a huge influence on the earth environment, but also imposes a direct influence upon the users of the buildings. In this connection, the development of sustainable architecture and promotion of green building materials have thus become the main issue. Taiwan is a small island with high civilization, so many interior spaces have the same problem including over-density of family members and over-used of decorative materials, all these have finally resulted in the waste of large amount of building materials. In order to prolong the life cycle of buildings and the reuse of the materials, we formulated the key assessment points and standards applicable to domestic green building materials so as to advance the practicable control measures to protect the human health as well as the environmental sources. The year 2005 is the action year of Recycling Green Building Material Label system. Recycling green building materials refer to those building products which are manufactured from the reclaimed materials and conform to the principles of Reduce, Reuse and Recycle. The Architecture and Building Research Institute of Ministry in Taiwan had publicized its program on July 31, 2005 and began to accept the application. At present, the assessment scope of recycling green building materials usually consist of three categories: (1) wooden recycling green building materials, (2) stone recycling green building materials, (3) recycling green building materials from mixed materials.
