We conducted a study to characterize T-cell subsets and cell function in HIV-infected Ghanaians. Flow cytometric analysis of PBMC from 16 healthy and 59 HIV-infected individuals, categorized according to the CDC criteria, was performed. Our results demonstrated that relative and absolute numbers of CD3+, CD4+, CD19+ cells, and the proportions of CD4+CD28+ and CD8+CD28+ cells were reduced in the HIV-infected individuals and continued to decrease with HIV progression. Relative expansions of HLA-DR+CD38+CD4+, and CD8+ T cells were found to be associated with HIV progression. Moreover, granzyme A and perform expressions in CD8+ T cells of HIV-infected patients were significantly higher compared to HIV-negative controls. Perforin expression in CD3-CD56+ NK cells was significantly lower in HIV positive Ghanaians.
