Making a Case for Dual Methods of Contraception Among Sex Workers as a Preventive Measure Against HIV/AIDS

Introduction: Within the context of commercial sex consistent condom use has been the main focus of prevention activities however an area which has been overlooked is the possibility of them contracting the virus through having repeated unsafe abortions. Methodology: A multi stage sampling design was used to select 2,792 brothel based sex workers from the head quarters of each of Nigeria's six health zones in addition to Lagos. Results: Although awareness and use of modern methods of contraception was at 83(percent) and 57(percent) respectively, only 18(percent) could correctly interpret the female menstrual cycle. Male condoms were most commonly used by 84(percent) of the respondents while 25(percent) used oral pills. However, 49(percent) experienced unwanted pregnancies in the previous year and 87(percent) of these pregnancies were aborted. Conclusion: Effective use of contraceptive methods depends to a large extent on the knowledge of the ovulation period of women. HIV prevention efforts should include the promotion of dual methods of contraception among sex workers.
