The monumental centre of Rome was inundated in the past by Tiber river. The last catastrophic flood occurred in 1870 and the monumental centre of the city was completely inundated. To protect Rome from floods, between the end of 19th and the beginning of 20th century river walls were built in Rome. The last significant flood occurred in 1937 provoke marginal damages. The aim of this study is to analyze and reconstruct the technical debate occurred at the end of 19th century between civil and hydraulic engineers concerning different structural measures to protect Rome from floods which lead to the design and the realization of the actual river walls.
