The present article revisits the old and never completely solved problem of mass cancellation in structural dynamics and proposes a generalised solution, based upon dynamic coupling/uncoupling of substructures. It is shown that it is possible to solve the problem, no matter where the extra masses are located, by means of a series of relatively straightforward calculations. It is also proven that one can obtain FRFs without having to undertake the corresponding measurements. The performance of the proposed technique is demonstrated by a simple numerical example. This paper has two companion ones, which use the same strategy of coupling, but applied to the problem of evaluating the FRF matrix and estimating rotational FRFs.
