Relationship between Functional and Geometric Modeling Domain: A Research Review

Design a product evolves information, methodology, management and data resources in order to define its assemblies, components and parts. In whole process, part plays a fundamental and important role in the design process in order to get a product that satisfy its global function definition intend by a design team or a company. In this paper is considered that a part design process could be integrated by three main designer activities. The first one is linked to the natural language used by designers in order to give a formal description of its intentions, to get shapes, geometry, mechanical properties, and so on, to the part design. Here, the design natural language is interpreted and converted in a set of codes and technical words related to the geometry and shapes that he/she needs to get the parts intended. The next activity, such description is translated in a set of codes and words, very near of a common technical language used by a field of design. It produces a filtered technical language and allows getting closed relationships between the geometric and functional descriptions attributes. But, it is yet classified as a set of sentences; syntactically composed those describe the part/product functions. The first analyze result in the existence of an inheritance mechanism in functional description tree. Also, the inheritance mechanism is repeated in the terms description tree of the solid features produced in CAD geometric model 3D. The last activity is associated to looking for a set of standard terminologies that govern the functional and geometric domains in part design process. Those processes could be incorporated in a CAD system, through some algorithms that may help design to deal with those activities described before. Many of those activities include morphologic components values that could be used by a parser to analyze functional description language grammar. And, also, to define the mechanical design technical terms group badges of the system CAD solid features. In that way, we can start the correlation process development between the function and the solid features group capable to accomplish it physically. This paper presents the research path describing the followed steps until the moment and shows the first results reached in the knowledge base organization on the one that the function to 3D geometric form automatic transformation would be implemented.
