This paper explores the Independent Modal Space Control (IMSC) as an active vibration control technique. This control method operates in the modal coordinate system, where control forces are developed m real time proportional to the modal displacements and velocities. One disadvantage of the IMSC method is that full control of the system requires an individual control force for each of modes of the system. If this is not the case spill-over will occur, where the control forces may excite the higher controlled modes. For a beam, where the effects of higher modes diminish rapidly, adequate control can be achieved by controlling only a few of the modes. This paper compares numerical and experimental results in the control of a cantilever beam. It is shown that when IMSC is implemented using either one or two control forces, rapid suppression of disturbances is achieved. The numerical and experimental results correlate well with one another.
