Hydraulic Characteristics of a Floating Buoy for Tidal Current Power Generation

This paper describes hydraulic characteristics of a columnar floating buoy with a semicircular cross section and vertical through-hole. The effective velocity head of the flow induced in the through-hole by the pressure difference between submerged upper flat and lower cylindrical wall reaches up to 1.5 times of the mainstream head. Therefore, it can be expected the power generation system for the tidal flow would be compact and the specific power becomes large. Experimental results are discussed on surface pressure distribution, average flow rate and head loss across the through-hole, drag and lift coefficients for system, and moreover they are compared with the numerical simulation.
