This study investigates a generating mechanism of nutrient trap or coastal trapping phenomenon between pollutant loads and water quality by the artificial coastal developments at the Yeongil Bay where located in the southeast coast of Korea. Consequently, the inflowing pollutant loads were transported to the landward by the high-density salinity water volume on the bottom-layer. Therefore, it formed nutrient trap or coastal trapping areas of pollutant loads. By this mechanism, it is clear that the water volume with high-density nutrient trapping area exists on both sides of the Pohang New-port. To improve water quality of this basin, the reduction of these nutrients loads should be the highest priority.
