Decommissioning of Offshore Platforms Utilizing Cost Effective Single Lift Technology

Removal of Large Offshore Structures can be very costly when conventional heavy lift technology is used. An innovative concept has been developed to lift large and heavy structures utilizing a structural system mounted on standard barges. Feasibility and technical merits of this concept known as Twin Marine Lifter (TML), has been documented using computer simulations and model testing for lifting of both topside deck structures and jackets. Three projects funded by the members of Decommissioning Technology Forum (DTF) consisting of BP UK, Shell UK, Total E & P Norge AS and Kerr-McGee (and previously also ConocoPhillips Norge) permitted an in-depth assessment of the TML technology to lift large and medium size topsides and jackets. This paper presents the technical merits of this concept and provides a comparative cost assessment of topside and jacket removal based on both conventional Heavy Lift Vessels (HLV) and the Twin Marine Lifter system.
