The role of monitoring as a research, computer-aided system used for environmental assessment both in the course and after liquidation of coal mines is presented. On the basis of recognised consequences of coal mines liquidation to the environment, the problems related to conducting the monitoring of various environmental elements is presented. There have been determined the methods and scope of conducting the monitoring in the process of coal mines liquidation, together with the reference data being in accordance with the legislation in force in Poland.
