Fluxes of CH4 and N2O from peatland buffer zone areas were studied using a closed chamber technique at six buffer zone areas (forested catchments) in Finland. The study sites were either pristine peatlands or former drainage sites restored a number of years before the present study. Samples were collected 4-5 times during the growing season of 2007 from eight systematically located sampling positions. In winter, samples were taken once from four points at each study site. CH4 fluxes showed high variation within and between the study sites and were significantly higher from buffer zones on pristine peatlands mires compared with the buffers constructed on restored sites. Thus, the results indicated that even after 7-9- years of development, created wetlands do not compare with buffers on pristine peatlands in CH4 production. Thus, the results showed that even some ten years after restoration the production of methane has not yet returned to levels typical for pristine mires. In contrast to CH4, N2O fluxes were low throughout the study period and no significant differences were found between the pristine and buffer zone areas.
