The peatland 'Hani Mire' is a fen peatland situated in the temperate region of China, with humid-continental climate and a monsoonal influence (Schroder 1988) in the Sino-Japanese floral region (Meusel and Jager 1992). This apparently undisturbed peatland is of considerable interest for mire ecologists and palaeo-ecologists as it is one of the few remaining areas of a former dominating fen mire type in the temperate region of the Northern Hemisphere. The research focused on the following questions:1. how did Hani Mire develop, is Hani Mire effectively undisturbed and can Hani Mire be called percolation mire, after Joosten & Clarke (2002)? The typical features of percolation mires are low water table fluctuation with large and evenly distributed water supply, thick peat layer and a low degree of decomposition coupled with a substantial water flow through the whole peat body.
