We studied successional changes in mire soil respiration processes from the first steps of paludification to the bog stage. Our study was conducted in seven sites within 8-km distance from each other on the Finnish coast of Gulf of Bothnia. In this area small mire basins of different age and development stage can be found. Sedge fens had the highest total soil respiration. The lowest soil respiration was measured at the opposite ends of the mire chronosequence, namely in bogs and sandy beach. The contribution of anaerobic CH4 flux to the total soil respiration was lowest in sandy beach and highest in sedge fens.
