THE CARBOCHLORINATION OF TITANIFEROUS FEEDSTOCKS IN A FLUIDIZED BED

Samples of titaniferous feedstock - rutile, titania slag and ilmenite - were screened. The particle and bulk densities and the sphericity of each fraction were measured. The minimum fluidizing and transport velocities of each fraction of slag and ilmenite were measured in an 80-mm-ID Perspex column. The relationship of Re to Ar at minimum fluidization and at the transport velocity was determined from these measurements. Chlorination tests in a 27-mm-OD quartz tube showed that (1) solid carbon speeds up the reaction rate, (2) rates of reaction at 1000°C and 1100°C are more or less the same and much higher that rates at 900°C, and (3) the rate of Chlorination correlates with the amount of iron in the feedstock. The information from these tests was used to design a 5-m-tall, 80-cm-diameter CFB.
