Contribution of fertilization practices to nitrate contamination of groundwater

Groundwater contamination by nitrate associated with fertilization practices is a ubiquitous environmental issue, and consequently of world-wide concern. NO_3 flux from the unsaturated zone to groundwater in related to fertilization practices was studied, based on in situ experiments. Results show that NO_3-N flux was 47.12 kg/(ha·a) at the HF (High Fertilization plot), 21.37 kg/(ha·a) at the CK (Control plot), 13.46kg/(ha·a) at the LF (Low Fertilization plot), and 9.96 kg/(ha·a) at the NF (No Fertilization plot). Application of abundant fertilizer would result in severe loss of NO_3-N with increasing loads to groundwater contamination. In order to reduce the potential of groundwater contamination in agricultural areas, the amount of fertilizer applied during agricultural cultivation must effectively be controlled in view of systematic combination of agricultural production and environmental protection.
