The research was conducted in the context ofexploration for the final disposal of low- and intermediate-level radioactive waste. The study area is approximately 25 km~2 in SW Hungary. The shallow and the deep aquifers were studied to understand the flow system and the hydrogeochemical evolution of waters in the study area, and to provide data for flow and transport model calibration. The upper zone, in which shallow groundwater can be found, consists of Pleistocene loess and weathered granite, whereas the deep flow system comprises fractured granite. Water samples were collected for major elements, trace elements, stable isotopes, and radiocarbon age determinations from precipitation, springs, surface waters, shallow dug wells, shallow (less than 50m deep) and deep boreholes. Good sample coverage was available for both shallow and deep flow systems.
