Simulation of oxidation of iron and manganese in groundwater near Zhanjiang in Guangdong, China

Groundwater in unconsolidated sediments near Zhanjiang, China, has high concentrations of iron ranging from 2 to 28 mg/L and manganese ranging from 0.01 to 0.9mg/L. In this paper, calculation of existing forms of iron and manganese in the groundwater is conducted on the basis of chemical equilibrium in solutions. The results indicate that iron and manganese in the groundwater near Zhanjiang occurs in the form of complex compounds of low valence and particle. After groundwater is pumped out of the land surface, complex compounds of low valence of iron will be oxidated by the oxygen in the air, with precipitation of minerals of high valence. The valence and existing form of manganese do not change since its oxidation-reduction potential is not reached.
