CO2 budget of the Krafla geothermal system, NE-Iceland

Natural CO2 emissions and the amount of CO2 fixed in the bedrock of the Krafla geothermal system have been determined. The natural emissions of CO2 of geothermal origin in Krafla are of the order of 84 kt/yr. The amount of CO2 that has accumulated in the Krafla bedrock during the 110 to 290 kyrs of activity is 1400Mt. A tectonic control over soil CO2 emissions is suggested near Mt. Krafla, but is less obvious in CO2 appears to be fixed in bedrock to the west of the Hveragil fault than to the east of it, and thus a negative correlation between CO2 fixation and soil CO2 missions is suggested.
