The paper focuses on a 3RT linkage used for large angular strokes, applied to a solar platform tracker. The linkage is used to replace the expensive and constructive challenging slew drivers used for azimuth tracking of photovoltaic platforms. The 3RT linkage consists of a connecting rod, a rocker and a slider, driven by a linear actuator. The slider displacement induces a large angular stroke (over 180°) of the rocker, assuring a relative small overall size and acceptable transmission angles. The paper presents the kinematical modeling of this linkage and the kinematical synthesis algorithm, developed for a numerical example applied to the azimuth tracking of a photovoltaic platform installed in the Brasov, Romania location.
