Development of Tailor-Made Robots From Concept to Realization for Small and Medium-Sized Enterprises

The market for industrial robots offers a wide range of robotic solutions. Despite this comprehensive range, it can be worthwhile for small or medium sized enterprises to develop customised robotic solutions in order to exceed the limits of available market solutions. Sometimes only a limited number of degrees of freedom is sufficient. This work presents an approach for in-house development of tailor-made industrial robots for small and medium sized enterprises and is meant to encourage the development of customised robotic solutions. As an introduction, the specifications at the outset and the method will be described. Subsequently the development of a suitable robot topology (type synthesis) as well as the determination of appropriate dimensions (dimensional synthesis) will be shown with the help of an example of application. The kinematic and dynamic equations build thereby the fundamentals.
