In order to study the influence of the fluctuating interface on turbulent mixing, a submerged vertical water jet impinging upward on an air/water free surface has been experimentally investigated. A combined PIV/PLIF technique is used to perform simultaneous velocity and concentration measurements in the vicinity of the air-water interface of a submerged axisymmetric jet in a rectangular tank. The turbulent structure is greatly influenced by the interface. Measurements of unsteady large-scale flow structures in turbulent jet impinging on a free surface revealed the interaction between the interface and the turbulent structures.
