This paper describes application of a background oriented Schlieren technique to obtain quantitative measurements of shock waves from explosions by processing high-speed digital video recordings. The technique is illustrated by an analysis of two explosions, a field-scale test using high-explosive (C4) with mass of kilogram-order and emulsion explosive (EMX). The visualization of the shock front is utilized to determine the shock Mach number, leading to a predicted peak overpressure behind the shock front. For both experiments, visualized images of shock front propagation were clearly obtained. The peak overpressure profile of EMX experiment agreed well with one recorded with PZT-type pressure transducers.
