Dynamic road marking (DRM) is a novel traffic management concept that uses light modules mounted in the road surface to emulate conventional road markings, which allows switching between different lane configurations depending on traffic conditions. In our product concept, a DRM marking is built up as an array of discrete modules, leaving a large fraction of the original road surface in between. LEDs are a logical choice for the light sources inside these modules because of their long liFetime and their small size, and because they are easily dimmed. Figure 1 shows an earlier prototype of our system, using standard 3-mm LED lamps (phosphor-converted white) behind circular windows.
