Modeling of HID lamp plasmas requires the consideration of radiative transfer. Besides natural convection, radiative transfer determines the details of the plasma temperature distribution. Since radiative transfer is an essentially non-local phenomenon, its correct treatment requires an enormous numerical effort, especially for lamps in horizontal burning position, which can only be modeled in three dimensions. Hence hitherto models always utilized simplified geometries (e.g. axial symmetry with neglect of the electrode regions) or approximate solutions of the radiative transfer equation (e.g. the radiation diffusion approach for optically thick radiation). The HID lamp model presented here consists of a fully three dimensional plasma model that is coupled to a separate radiative transfer module. Results shown are based on a radiative transfer code for axially symmetric geometry, but eventually a three dimensional radiative transfer model can be applied in the same way.
