The advent of Ceramic Metal Halide (CMH) lamps has revolutionized commercial lighting applications, due to these lamps having better color control and color rendering over conventional Quartz Metal Halide (QMH) lamps. Since its introduction in 1995, CMH lamps have been developed in the 'low' wattage category (20-150w). This paper reviews the methodology utilized in the development of successful higher wattage retrofit designs (250-400w). It will be shown that these High Watt designs offers the same attractive features of the low wattage CMH lamps: good color control, high initial luminous efficacy and excellent color rendition. Testing also indicates that the lamps have superior lumen maintenance, compared to High Watt QMH lamps.
