The European "NumcLiTe" project is targeted at reducing energy used by street lighting and is examining eveiy element of street lighting systems, including the reflective properties of road surfaces. The Transport Research Laboratory (TRL) is tasked with trialling a prototype lighting system developed by the research consortium to determine parameters for its safe vise by road-users. Following this, a pilot installation will be constructed on roads in Albi, France in 2004, on which further performance assessments will be made. An aimof the project is to utilise possible benefits to human vision at low-light levels of the shorter wavelengths present in the light from ceramic metal halide (CMH) discharge lamps. If lower light levels can be used this will contribute to the overall aim of reducing energy consumption.
