Compact Electrodeless Discharge Lamp driven by Low-power Microwave

The electrodeless mercury-free discharge lamps have attracted an increasing interest in the field of lamp industry from the viewpoint of long-life and high-efficacy lamps. The high-intensity discharge lamps such as a sulfur lamp [ I ] and a cluster lamp [2] recently developed need microwave power higher than 200 W to keep the stable discharges in the lamps. In the present work, high-pressure microwave discharges ignited in compact quartz lamps by simple-structured launchers were examined to develop the high intensity discharge lamp without any electrodes by the microwave power lower than 100 W. The lamps could be ignited using launchers made of commercially available coaxial cables. It was verified that the stable discharge can be sustained in the lamps filled with atmospheric pressure xenon gas by applying the low-power microwave of 10 - 30 W and that the lamp efficacy remarkably increased to 38.8 lm/W [3], [4] when the additives such as Nal and Sch were mixed into xenon gas in the discharge lamp.
