With the turn of the millennium we got sudden revolution in every field of the TV-world. There was a digital revolution due to broadcast activities. TV-transmission moved from analogue to DVB, distributed by satellite, cable and terrestrial. Important countries around the world combined this change with the introduction of HDTV. But meanwhile video-content is not only available from the well established networks. There are more and more activities due to more powerful compression standards used in the www, e. g. streaming technology. Beside this digital revolution will be driven by activities of the appliance industry. Because of established digital standards, every company during IFA '03 in Berlin showed activities in the networking area: IEEE1394, HAVI, LAN or wireless transmissions. Furthermore, PC-technology is entering the consumer market, i.e. mass memory is available and necessary due to the above mentioned software requirements. Software capacity within 10 years moved from several kbit up to several Mbyte for a TV-set supporting digital receiver, hard disc recorder and internet access. Last but not least, we are going to use new display technologies beside CRT, which was predominant during the last decades. PDP, LCD, and micro display based projection technologies are going to conquer the home cinema market. In parallel, a new era of signal processing occurs, in order to supply the display with data with an adequate fixed pixel resolution independent from sources.
