Early efforts to commercialize nanoclay filled resins failed to effectively exfoliate the nanoclay platelets and as a result, these early nanocomposites were difficult to use and failed to significantly improve physical properties. PolyOne Corporation's development of a proprietary process to effectively and efficiently exfoliate nanoclay fillers is a critical element in commercializing high-performance nanotechnology polyolefins. Utilizing this proprietary process, PolyOne Corporation has developed Nanoblend Concentrates-Polyolefin based resins containing high levels (40%) of nanoclay fillers. Used at letdown ratios of 10%-20%, these products provide superior physical, aesthetic and processing properties as compared to traditional fillers such as talc, calcium carbonate and even glass fibers. Nanoblend concentrates enable compounders/film producers to develop customized formulations that best meet their specific requirements for applications in packaging, film, containers, and other markets.
