The use of air valves as protection devices in pressure hydraulic transients

The main objective of this paper is to discuss the use of air valves to protect pipes against hydraulic transients. In a first case study it will be shown that an air inlet valve, combined with a double acting air valve of low air discharge capacity, can replace a surge tank connected to an apex point of a pipe. In two additional case studies the use of these air valve and air inlet valve combinations is discussed in order to protect the system in cases such as a pump failure or a pipeline burst.
