The tensile tests to separation failure have been performed to compare the life cycles of identical specimens with and without a small geometric imperfection and imposed local forces. This has an important bearing on the development of a new engineering methodology for assessing the Steady State Tearing (SST) in thin plates made from brittle and ductile materials. We seek to correlate parameters of the SST crack growth with the mechanical properties of the material, which are unaffected by the presence of crack-wake regions.
