The aim of this study was to comprehensively characterize the metabolic changes occurring in peri-contusional region using PET technology. Although experimental studies have demonstrated intracerebral hemorrhage-induced neurotoxicity (Gong, Boulis et al. 2001), direct clinical correlation in TBI has been technically challenging. To date, very different physiological values within and around the contusions have been reported in the literature We develop a method that minimizes the operator dependency and standardizes the procedure for the definition of regions of contusion and pericontusional (i.e. edematous) tissue. Ischemic burden (OEF > OEF_(crit), Goles et al, 2004), flow-metabolism coupling (CMR_(O2) vs. CBF plot) and glycolytic-aerobic metabolic ratio (CMR_(O2) / CMR_(glc)) were studied using voxel-based and ROI analysis
