Transport for London employees have been using smart cards for over a year. Tube and bus customers have been using them since June 2002. Over 500,000 cards are now in circulation and that number will swell to over 2 million by the end of 2004. After a brief overview of the scope of Transport for London's services and its smartcard ticketing scheme, this presentation will review some of the key implementation issues already encountered and look ahead to the key challenges and aspirations of the next few years. Issues already encountered that will be discussed include: using the introduction of new technology to encourage business process change; managing interfaces with other transport operators and government agencies; and factors to consider when planning and introducing new technology. Challenges and aspirations to be discussed will include: integrated transport within greater London and beyond; and infrastructure-less ticketing.
