In this paper, results concerning a bio-treatment study of a soil contaminated by PAH are presented. The soil comes from the Bovisa area, a polluted case of national interest located in the suburbs of Milano, where a plant for coal gasification worked for about 80 years. The contamination of the area has an extension of about 4000 m2 and a depth up to about 15 m. It was probably due to liquid tar leaks from underground pipes where this product was transported toward storage tanks. Studies in pilot scale have been done both in aerated closed columns filled with mixtures formed by soil, bulking agents, nutrients and in open boxes in which the same mixture were manually turned. In this work a comparison between results obtained in both experiments and a description of the innovative biopile designed on the basis of pilot plants data are reported.
