COMPARATIVE PILOT STUDY FOR SELECTING ENHANCED BIOREMEDIATION INOCULANT

An enhanced bioremediation pilot test was completed at an active dry cleaners facility in Portland, Oregon to determine the effectiveness of two competing enhancement inoculants. The purpose of the project was to determine which of the inoculants would be most effective in the subsequent remediation of site soil and groundwater. The two competing inoculants were WILCLEAR? (provided by JRW Technologies, through North Wind Environmental) and Cl-OUT? (provided by Cl-^sSolutions). Both inoculants were first introduced into site groundwater in the fall of 2001, and groundwater monitoring was initiated to observe the effects of the materials on the groundwater chemistry. Additional injections of each material were completed as necessary to maintain a suitable reductive environment. Ten groundwater sampling events were completed over the 180-day duration of the pilot study. The collected data were used to assess the effectiveness of the biodegradation and to identify causes of inefficiencies in the system. Both materials (WILCLEAR? and Cl-OUT?) were apparently successful in reducing concentrations of PCE and TCE (resulting in one to two orders of magnitude reduction in concentration). The WILCLEAR? injections, however, were not able to continue the dechlorination process beyond cis-DCE (which increased in concentration as the test progressed) during the pilot-test time frame. The Cl-OUT? injections were successful in reducing the chlorinated hydrocarbons (including cis-DCE and vinyl chloride) in the treatment area within the same time frame.
