JR East developed a diesel and storage battery hybrid train to decrease negative environmental impacts, and it has been in operation since 2007. Now JR East is developing a "Catenary and battery powered hybrid train" as a new system. An experimental train with this new hybrid system installed, type "kumoya E995", was produced in September 2009, and it has been making test runs from October 2009 through October 2010. This document introduces the background of the development, an outline of the experimental train, and the test runs.
