Use of hot oil or semi-hot oil is recognized as the more effective quenchant for the reduction of hardening distortion compared with cold oil. It is recognized that control of either temperature or agitation of quenching oil is effective to reduce hardening distortion. However, it is also possible to improve quench hardening power and reduce hardening distortion effectively by adjusting length of vapor blanket stage and shifts the position of boiling stage observed on cooling curve by controlling oil surface pressure during steel quenching. In this paper, example of the oil surface pressure control processes and their favorable results are presented.
